AGM 19th March 2020
AKS WI Record of the 61st Annual Meeting
Held on March 9th 2020 at 8-45 pm at the Robin Hood Theatre Averham
1. The Record of the 60th Annual Meeting Jenny Quickmire apologised for omitting to bring the record along to the meeting. Dr Rose advised that it could be read and approved along with this year’s record at the next monthly meeting and it is not deemed necessary to carry the previous record over to the following year. It was agreed that this was the course of action to be taken.
2.Confirmation of the Records The confirmation will be made at the next meeting.
3. Appointment of auditor for 2020. C.B. confirmed that the WI scheme has been adopted for audit of the books.
4. Presentation and Adoption of the Financial Statement. It had been necessary to present the accounts and financial statement as part of the business meeting as CB could not stay for the whole meeting. She explained that the end of year figures was down on the previous years by approximately £250. In order to cover costs of meetings and expenses £1000 was required therefore some focus would be needed in the coming year to correct the shortfall. Discussion followed with Janet Walker asking why were members’ drinks paid for at the annual dinner and asked if members should pay for their supper on Burn’s Night etc in order to reduce the need for fundraising. It was agreed that pre dinner drinks would not be funded by WI funds. In view of the Burn’s Night costs it is not possible to charge members for their supper as it is part of the monthly meeting programme. It will therefore be necessary to increase the cost of tickets for non-members. Following discussions and explanations on various items Maureen Justice proposed the adoption of the Financial Statement . Jenny Cawkwell seconded the proposal and it was duly adopted. (Financial Statement attached to record)
Angela Moore presented CB with flowers and a present and thanked her for her hard work preparing the accounts.
5. Committee’s Annual Report. JQ presented the report which contained a resume of the years meetings and events. A need to attract more members was stressed. (A copy of the report is attached.)

Record of the Business Meeting Held on Monday 14th October 2019
Welcome – Angela Moore opened the meeting at 7.30pm to sixteen members, introducing our guest speaker Roy Mitchell from the National Trust. Roy’s presentation was all about the excavation of King Richard III who was killed in the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. In August 2012 a search began underneath a car park to find the Kings remains. Lots of research had led the excavators to believe that his body was buried in the car park where in medieval times the Grey Friars Church had once stood. Roy told us all about the discovery of the Kings skeleton and the scientific examination that followed after a descendant of the King was found enabeling DNA samples to be compared which proved it was indeed King Richards skeleton. Roy shared lots of pictures and stories about the ceremony held for the King when he was reinterred in Leicester Cathedral. His presentation was given in a light hearted but very interesting way and made the presentation very enjoyable.

We began by singing Jerusalem and then in the absence of the president and vice-president Jenny Quickmire (Secretary) introduced the speaker Webb Freddington who is co-owner of the cheese shop on the Flying Horse Walk in Nottingham. He introduced us to the different types of cheese available from those only a few days old to those which could be up to two years after maturing. He also explained to us how they sourced their cheeses, and how his brother made a journey each week to their suppliers, mainly in the south of England but those from Italy were obviously flown in! They do try to provide local and English cheeses and have recently been asked to provide cheese for the managers’ dining room at Notts Forest.
He then went on to demonstrate various recipes using cheese, including lovely seasonal salads with figs, pears and walnuts. These were consumed with relish by members after he had finished speaking. Record of the 58th Monthly Meeting
held at Kwikfit Garage Sleaford Rd Newark
on July 9th at 6.30pm.
Topic : Motor Maintenance.
12 members joined the team of mechanics at Kwikfit for a very instructive and informative session on how to make sure our cars are in good road worthy order.
Apologies: J. Rogers, A Brothwell, J Walker, J Bartlett.
The group of 12 were divided into 3 groups of 4 which worked very well for the 3 different work stations around which the 3 groups rotated. Group 1 had the bonnet up and discovered the importance of regular top up maintenance for oil, water and screen wash. Advice was given about brake fluids and anti-freeze and maintaining windscreen wipers in good order. One trick for clean wipers to ensure good cleaning of the windscreen is to wipe the blades with vinegar to erase grease!
Group 2. Had the wheel off a car and learnt how to change a wheel. Discussion also took place about the newer cars not having spare wheels and how best to manage that situation.
Group 3 learnt how to check for the safe tread on tyres, and how to check tyre pressure to the correct psi. We also learnt the importance of having the wheels balanced and checking the tracking to ensure the best performance of the tyres.
We then rejoined as one group for refreshments and a quiz on the evening. We also learnt such a lot about buying and maintaining tyres. Code word is always buy the premium brand! JC thanked the Kwikfit team for their hospitality which included a goody bag of tyre related gifts. It was a most enjoyable and educational evening.
There was no business meeting but members were reminded of important dates before the next meeting

Meeting report for January 8th 2018
Held at the RHT7.15pm
‘On With the Show’ presented by Mark Lebeter
Jenny Cawkwell welcomed 20 members with a New Year Greeting and the meeting opened with ‘Jerusalem’.
1. Apologies were received from C. Binks, M Justice, J Emeny, A Robinson, G Gilroy, G Cobley, J Walker, R. Galley, J Owens.
Jenny welcomed Mark Lebeter (Premises Supervisor for RHT) who entertained the members with a very lively and amusing talk about presenting a show on stage from beginning to end. It is a very complex process especially for a production like ‘A Christmas Carol which was the latest and very successful event, having been a sell out weeks before the opening night l
Mark went on to explain the it had taken 281 days from beginning to curtain up on the opening night but so much work went on in between. Major considerations for any production include logistics of lighting and sound effects, cost of production, casting in terms of how many men/women ratio and age ranges and above all does it have the WOW factor?
Mark took us through the time line for all the different elements of the production such as set building lighting and special effects, which for ‘Carol’ took 150 man hours alone and of course the costume design and production. (In this case ably undertaken by our own WI member Jackie Rogers) Members were surprised at how many volunteers were required for each production besides the theatrical stuff, to cover the front of house like carparking, tickets, ice creams, coffees, and bar staff with a minimum of 11 people required each performance. Mark summed up that all this work is done for fun, with a tongue in cheek moment! JC thanked him for the presentation.

6. Any Other Business.
6.1. A Burns’ Night Luncheon /night. Following on from the Burns’ Night event read in correspondence JC will attend the County event in order to glean a few ideas to perhaps stage an event for AKS as part of the 60th celebrations.
6.2 The Christmas Party Dec 11th 7pm Robin Hood Theatre. The party food list was circulated and finalized JC reminded members that the competition is for a best wrapped parcel, the contents of which should be £3-£4. She suggested giving 1 Christmas Card from a ‘WI Friend’ and if members would like to make a donation in lieu of numerous Christmas Cards, any donations will be sent to Framework.
Following the business meeting Lorraine Bousfield and Jayne Owens regaled members with their paper craft skills making Christmas decorations. We all soon became embroiled in the cutting and sticking to produce an exquisite (well some were!) paper snowflakes, even a bit of glitter did little to enhance some of them. Loarraine’s project to make a state of the art Christmas tree from a concertinaed piece of paper went marginally better. The trick with this one was to get the BBQ wooden skewer absolutely running centrally down the concertina. Umph! No matter the result we all had great fun together with lots of chat. The noise levels were phenomenal Barbara Kirby thanked Lorraine and Jayne for their hardwork in preparing all the elements and helping us on the night.
The competition for the best tree/snowflake was won by Maureen Justice.
The Raffle was won by Barbara Kirby.

Jenny Cawkwell (President) welcomed 26 members 2 guests and Mr Patrick Ashcroft to the meeting. Jerusalem was sung.
1. Apologies were received from Gill Gilroy, Jenny Bartlett, Carole Binks and Julie Clough.
Mr Ashcroft introduced himself with an explanation for his ‘period dress’ which represented a typical labourer of the period of the First World War which is where the story began. At the out break of hostilities in 1914, German munitions seriously out stripped those of Britain. An urgent remedy was needed and the mover and weaver for the job was Viscount Chetwyn. He was given free reign to establish an effective munitions industry as quickly as possible. Mr Ashcroft went onto explain why the major munitions site ended up at Chilwell Notts. Attenborough station provided ideal transport links, there was also river transportation close by and Stanton and Stavely were also handy. The site also needed a hill for safe storage of munitions. Chilwell met the requirements. Next was needed a sustainable work force and as most of the men were fighting in France a large number of women stepped into their shoes. (4000 women were employed at this site) It was hard dangerous work and necessitated working with rather nasty chemicals/substances which had the awful effect of turning the ladies hair and skin yellow: hence the Canary Girls! They proved themselves to be a worthy workforce. Makeup was even provided to help disguise the effects of the work. An army of very brave women facing very real danger everyday. Many of the working practises developed here also contributed to present day working. Mr Ashcroft was thanked by Jenny Quickmire(meeting Sec)

Record of the 342nd Monthly Meeting February 13th 7.15pm
Held at the Robin Hood Theatre.
Jenny Cawkwell (President) welcomed 22 members and 3 guests to the meeting. Jerusalem was sung prior to JC’s welcome to Lucinda Kitchin who gave a very lively and eye opening talk on her 5½ months experience teaching English to various groups of south Koreans in a heavily industrial city and port of Incheon. She had chosen this city in preference to Seoul thinking it would be more rural and picturesque but nothing could have been further from the truth! She spent the next few months in a cold damp impoverished bed sit for home and a very hostile culture. At the first opportunity she left her job there only half way through her contract and moved to Thailand! It was a real insight into a very different culture to our own but a stark reminder not to book any holidays there too soon!

1. Apologies were received from J Wilkinson, L Bousfield, B Kirby, G Gilroy, A Robinson, J Keel
2. The Record from the January meeting was approved
